I married my first husband, Mark, at 20. We weren't crazy or reckless; we were perfectly normal. Our families belonged to high society and frequented private clubs. We both came from wealthy, well-established families in a city where reputation mattered.
Our parents went on holiday together, attended charity galas together, sat on the same boards, exchanged Christmas cards with pictures taken by professional photographers, and had even held engagement parties before we got engaged.
Looking back, we were two well-dressed puppets caught in a web of obligations.
We were neither crazy nor reckless;
We were what you expected.
I walked up the aisle in a designer dress chosen by my mother; I didn't have much to say. Everyone was saying we were the perfect couple: two bright young people, raised in comfort and enjoying every opportunity, living the life our families had planned for us.
